Recorded in the same sessions as previous single John Woo, at Almost Studios in Manchester, Gary marks a strong second offering by the London band.
 
Shifting effortlessly from a ska-shuffle to a flat-out sing-along chorus, trumpet harmonies bring a nostalgic sense of melancholy to the otherwise jaunty track. There are shades of Blur and Bloc Party, harking back to the sense of fun and buoyancy a band can have when just writing purely for the enjoyment of themselves.
 
Written about a Crystal Palace native who wasn’t allowed in to drink in the pub because he didn’t have the Covid-19 app on his phone, the band take a look into the character and the wider social narrative of the threat of an older generation being ever excluded from society by technological advances. The track has meaning and food for thought behind its tongue-in cheek, upbeat tone.
 
As ever, Gary is a continuation into the My Fat Pony universe. Making reference to sitcom Black Books and “Kung-Fu-ing”, the band paint the setting and the character of Gary in a way that makes sense to them – through the eyes of TV culture.
