about

Recorded in Manchester with Nile Marr (Hans Zimmer touring member, son-of-Smith) and Dale Charlton, My Fat Pony detail their early energetic tracks, honed through playing live, in recorded form - documenting the first stage of the band. Guitarist Felix Knox's lyricism tells of a passion for cinema, art and cartoon, whilst situating itself in the landscape of being a London creative in your mid-20's. The post-art school fun displays My Fat Pony as a band full of zest and flair. Their live shows are a refreshing burst of energy and their debut EP reflects that.

Opening track 55 Cancri Lane is a surrealist tale about intergalactic bees, showing the band's humour and imagery-led lyricism. Moving on to the band's previously released singles - John Woo, Pick It Back Up and Gary are melodic indie earworms, drawing comparisons with Bloc Party and Blur. Students harks back to the bands earlier punk days, with a western-like pulsating riff charging the track forward at a considered gallop.

This sets the tone for the rest of the EP. Darcy maintains a rawer, scuffier edge than the previous tracks. There is a sense of the small venues and DIY mindset the band started from. These songs would not be out of place in London Indie clubs circa 2004. Simplicity and adolescent energy carry these songs along.  The band's rhythm section really come into their own on John Woo, taking a simple melody and providing it with the burst of energy it needs.

60s Space engine is a welcome change of pace. A swaying vocal duet, Walker's voice takes centre stage here for the first time and really shines. "There are no bad flaws, just bad players" is a beautifully poignant lyric masked within the busy instrumentation.

An intergalactic theme runs throughout Music For Pleasure. The question for My Fat Pony is where is their sound heading next once they've reached orbit.
