It’s evident that we are cinephiles, but it is really shown in this track. A letter to Johnny Flynn. Singer/Guitarist Felix Knox writes directly to Flynn, penning his frustration of the British-actor’s commitment to film over his music.
 
Knox stating “I love Johnny Flynn but I wish he’d just stick to making music ‘cause he’s a way better musician than actor in my book – it’s sad than acting clearly makes him more money. However, this song was written before his newest album ‘Lost in Cedar Wood’, which I love, and Kate [trumpet] and I saw him in The Motive and The Cue and he was an incredible actor in that… so the song is BS!”.

Remixes come from friends of the band The Umlauts, Yaang and Kempner, reimagining the joyful hooks of Pick It Back Up through an electronic lens. Kempner’s rework features chopped and screwed drums and arpeggiated acid synths, whilst the pitched vocals create a new eerie tension to the song. Yaang change tack, leading with a breakbeat sample and melodic bassline to compliment the vocal mantra of “you only spend money” that echo’s throughout. It is a retake that almost harks back to the euphoria of early Chemical Brothers.

The Umlauts bring their signature droning euro-thud to Pick It Back Up. Four-to-the-floor and pulsating, it is and artful adaptation of the original and telling of the groups emergence as one of the more exciting young acts merging dance music with the spirit of post-punk.
